Together, we will open the doorsWelcome to our new cathedral!
A new sign of our togetherness in Christ
The Church is Christ's body on Earth; it continues His mission by offering worship to the Father and by carrying out works of mercy to signal the presence and the coming of the Kingdom of God. This is true on a global level, but it is also true on a more immediate, local level, through a diocese. The Diocese of Madison is Christ's body in southwestern Wisconsin, united under the guidance and care of our bishop.
But a diocese needs more than just a person to unite and guide it. It needs a home. This is the role of a cathedral; it houses the cathedra, the bishop's chair and the sign of his governance and service over a place. But it also serves as a central house of worship, communion, and charity for all Catholics who are entrusted to a bishop's care, and a sign of their unity in Christ.
The Diocese of Madison has been without such a home since 2005, after a fire tragically destroyed our first mother-church, the Cathedral of St. Raphael. After nearly 20 years, the time is right to re-establish a place where Catholics can come together as one body in Christ, in faith, in hope, in love, in worship, in beauty, and in mission.
